When was the last time you listened to a podcast and found something genuinely useful, where did you store it? In a Notion doc? Did you screenshot it? A voice memo? For me I found that most of the time it was super hard to capture these insights.

💡 TLDR; Spotify made podcasts answerable in the moment (May 2026). Nothing on Spotify makes them rememberable. This feature is the memory layer to capture insights and quotes while you listen, build a searchable knowledge base, and share the best moments out to LinkedIn and X.

I love learning.

So naturally when I discovered Spotify Podcasts, I dove in as a new way to learn, Lenny's Podcast, The Daily Stoic, The Diary of a CEO. But I soon realized I was consuming far more than I was retaining. I'd hear a brilliant piece of advice and have no way to save it or find it again. It started to feel unproductive, and I gradually stopped listening. :((

This lead me to think of a feature idea for Spotify where users could interact with the episode they were listening to with a chat interface and it would have context on the episode as well as general knowledge to then provide answers.

📌 Origin: I logged this idea in my Feature Frontier database on Feb 8, 2026 as "Ask Spotify Podcasts." On May 21, 2026, at its Investor Day, Spotify shipped the Q&A half of it. Rather than claim a clean prediction, this teardown keeps my original vision and then builds the half Spotify didn't ship.

Since then I've used this feature and although it really has filled that hole of the podcast feeling very one-sided, there are still some loopholes and areas where I could see some improvement.

2. The platform: Spotify podcasts

Spotify is the second-largest podcast platform in the U.S. (behind YouTube) and has made podcasts and, increasingly, AI central to its strategy.

3. The problem

Podcasts are the highest-effort, lowest-retention medium a knowledge-seeker consumes. You can spend 90 minutes on an episode and walk away with nothing you can find again. Audio can't be skimmed, highlighted, copy-pasted, or searched the way text can. The single insight you wanted is trapped inside a linear stream with no capture surface.

Spotify's new AI Q&A helps you understand something in the moment — but the moment it's over, the understanding evaporates. There is no save, no library, no export, no share.

4. Why this problem? (User evidence)

This isn't hypothetical.

Edison Research finds that 74% of listeners say learning something new is a top reason they tune in — the #1 reason, ahead of entertainment (71%) and staying up to date (60%).
